At Twoth, we provide orthodontics treatments to correct dental misalignments and enhance oral health. Dr Neil Counihan, Specialist in Orthodontics provides fixed orthodontics and Invisalign First removable aligners:

Fixed Braces
Fixed braces are a traditional and highly effective orthodontic treatment used to correct a variety of dental misalignments in children, adolescents, and adults. Consisting of metal or ceramic brackets attached to the teeth, fixed braces utilize wires and elastic bands to apply gentle and controlled pressure, gradually shifting teeth into their desired positions.

Invisalign First
Invisalign First is designed for a specific age range, typically addressing the orthodontic needs of children whose permanent teeth are still erupting. The system is suitable for children in the age range of 6 to 10 years old, focusing on early orthodontic intervention during a critical stage of dental development.

Two Orthodontic Treatment Types

Invisalign First Clear Braces For Children In London

Invisalign First is a clear aligner treatment designed for young children and can be used to correct issues with arch development and expansion, tooth crowding and spacing, tooth protrusions, and the overall appearance of a child’s smile.‍ As a child grows, their smile grows with them. And even with baby teeth, it may be the perfect time for your child to start orthodontic treatment. This is known as Phase 1 treatment. At this stage, orthodontists can see issues that may need early treatment to address a developing problem.

Fixed Braces For Children In London

Fixed braces consist of a series of small square attachments (brackets) cemented to the teeth. These brackets are highly sophisticated as every tooth has its own bracket design engineered to achieve optimal final tooth position and angulation. They are available as either ceramic or mini metal brackets. The cosmetic brackets blend in with the colour of the teeth.

What Happens At A Children’s Orthodontics Appointment

Your Children’s Orthodontics treatment will be tailored to your exact requirements; therefore, one treatment can be very different from the next. However, we’ve provided a basic overview of a Children’s Orthodontics below.

First step

Consultation

During the consultation, our orthodontic specialist will evaluate your child's dental and facial structure, discuss their orthodontic needs, and explain the treatment options available. We may take X-rays, photographs, and impressions of your child's teeth for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning.

second step

Preparation

If necessary, your child's dentist may recommend tooth extractions to create space for proper alignment. Your child may require dental spacers or expanders to gradually widen the dental arches and facilitate optimal alignment.

third step

Treatment

Braces or clear aligners will be custom-made and applied to your child's teeth to gently move them into the desired positions over time. Regular orthodontic visits will be scheduled to adjust the appliances, monitor progress, and ensure treatment is on track.

When you are done

After-Care

Encourage your child to maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly, paying extra attention to cleaning around the braces or aligners. Attend routine orthodontic appointments for adjustments and check-ups to ensure the treatment progresses smoothly and effectively.

After Care of Children’s Orthodontics

Brush Regularly

Anyone wearing children’s braces should still brush their teeth twice a day, for two minutes in the morning and evening. Ideally, teeth should be brushed after every meal.

Floss Daily

Flossing ensures your gums remain healthy, plus it also keeps braces extra clean. It can be tricky to floss with braces, but our experts will show you exactly how it should be done.

No Eating Sticky or Crunchy Food

Unfortunately, anyone wearing children’s fixed braces will need to avoid sticky or crunchy food, meaning many favourite snacks and meals are off-limits. Eating food of this type can seriously damage the braces, causing them to be less effective.

No Fizzy Drinks

This is a recommendation for everyone, and not just those with children’s fixed braces. If you do drink a sugary fizzy drink, make sure you brush after, or at least swill some water around your mouth.

Meet The Dental Team

CLINICIANS

I have now visited Twoth on three different occasion... The first time was to take my son (8 years old) to see Dr Counihan for a braces consultation and my son absolutely loved the entire experience from start to finish. In fact, he was so excited and relaxed about it all he wanted to get started immediately.

The second time around, I went to see Dr Counihan myself for a second opinion and found the experience just as good as my son did

Before I found Dr Neil Counihan I had a long history of dental trauma and sadly I repeatedly was subjected to very poor dentistry. I was scared to let anybody near my mouth and teeth. I had lost hope!

Dr Counihan made me the promise, with the right care I can keep my mouth healthy and definitely keep my teeth for the rest of my life.

And most importantly he made me feel safe and listened to

Frequently Asked Questions

Find the answer to the most common questions. Everything you need to know about Children’s Orthodontics

Children’s fixed braces can be for children of any age. However, they are most commonly used on children aged 12-13. This is because by this time, their adult teeth have appeared, but the jaw is still soft enough for effective treatment.

Please don’t think that fixed braces are only suitable for children, as we have fitted braces to adults of all ages, who want to straighten their teeth and improve their smile. One of our experienced orthodontists can advise you on suitable options, regardless of age.

There is no pain when children’s fixed braces are installed, although it can be a strange sensation. However, there could be some soreness after the braces are fitted, and also after they are adjusted.

Our team will be able to give you tips on how to minimise the soreness. If pain is experienced, an orthodontist will be able to check the fixed braces and make any adjustments required.

For most the side effects of braces are minimal. However, there could be some mild discomfort or irritation, as well as slight jaw pain, especially after braces have just been fitted. Other issues, such as decalcification and tooth decay, can be mostly avoided by practicing good dental hygiene.

Some children with braces also experience slight difficulty eating, especially after their braces have been tightened. This is nearly always a temporary issue which resolves itself over the course of a few days.

Not necessarily. Those looking for a more discreet fix to their issues might opt for Invisalign over traditional braces, but Invisalign can only help with less serious cases of misalignment. For more severe cases, fixed braces are usually the best choice.

Our team members will be able to guide you through the different options available, to help you and your child make the most appropriate decision.

There is a common belief that braces weaken teeth, but it’s an incorrect one. While braces cause teeth to move around in the mouth, this doesn’t cause them to weaken in any way. Nor do they cause loose teeth or cause teeth to fall out.

However, it is very important to take care of your teeth while wearing fixed braces. Failure to do this can cause damage to teeth. Your orthodontist or hygienist can talk with you about how to look after your teeth while wearing fixed braces.

The length of time a child is required to wear braces really depends on the severity of their issues and their teeth’s responsiveness to the braces. We will advise you of the length of time we think braces will be necessary, but this could change during the treatment.

Colour is always a tough decision. Some want bright braces to make them stand out from the crowd, while others want something a little subtler. We offer everything from bright orange braces to clear braces. The best colour for braces is really the colour your child is most comfortable with.

It is important to avoid both sticky and crunchy food when wearing fixed braces, as they can easily damage the braces. You should also avoid eating too much hard food, plus sugary fizzy drinks should also be avoided – regardless of whether you’re wearing braces or not. Also, avoid chewing gum while wearing children’s fixed braces.

Patient care is our top priority
